Sue’s Cambodia Connection

In memory of a dear lost friend

Mike Matsushita My dear friend Mike Matsushita was a tour guide in Indochina for Intrepid Travel. He travelled and became passionate about the people and children in Vietnam and Cambodia in particular, taking tours to a variety of orphanages in Indo China.

Mike was tragically killed in the 2005 London Bombings. Mike went missing for at least a week and during this time of uncertainty,  I set up a  website to keep his family and friends in touch.

Mike was eventually identified as one of the victims of this tragic act of brutality and his website became a crucial memorial website where people from all around the world came to grieve and share their loss.

Together with the Intrepid Foundation, we established a fund where people could donate to help the children Mike so loved in Indo China. In that first 3 months we raised $80K which was distributed to 5 charities in Indochina. Read more about this.

Sunrise Children’s Village - Cambodia

Sue and GC

Sunrise Children’s Village was one of the recipient organisations of Mike’s Fund for Indo China.

I happened to met Geraldine Cox in April 2006 on one of her fundraising tours in Sydney. We made the connection - our dear friend Mike.

I visited Sunrise Children’s Village in Phnom Penh during a trip to Cambodia in September 2006 - and the rest, as they say, is history. I fell immediately in love with the children at Sunrise, in particular with the plight of Waew - who I now consider as "mine".

New Hope for Cambodian Children - Cambodia

New Hope Quilts New Hope is a partner organisation of the Australia Cambodia Foundation Inc who adminster Sunrise Children’s Villages in Cambodia.

New Hope supports orphan children with HIV/Aids.

They have numerous projects - including a Quilt making project where women who have HIV/ Aids, who have been widowed or abandoned - make quilts to earn a living and support their children.

Zulu Communications purhases quilts from New Hope and use them for fundraising for New Hope and also support other organisations by donating quilts for their fundraising. Click here to find out more
